Your Dog and Fireworks - Tips for the Firework Season

Your Dog and FireworksBelow are some tips to help your dog during the firework season:

  • Dog's need a bolt hole, somewhere they know to be safe, comfortable and quiet;create a den.
  • Prepare treat releasing toys in advance, such as KONG's, so you are ready.
  • Keep your TV and/or radio on with a slightly higher volume, to help block out the worrying noises/sounds.
  • Walk your dog before dark and close any cat flaps.
  • Close curtains/blinds to block out the bright flashes.
  • Do not block off areas that your dog is used to accessing, they must have the option to go where they can feel safe.
  • Offer comfort, you cannot reinforce any emotions your dog is feeling, but you can help to make them feel less anxious and in some cases, relaxed enough to settle and be happy in your company.
  • Invest in a Thundershirt, super for helping to relieve anxieties.
  • Scullcap & Valerian can work wonders, the right dose for the evening should help to achieve a relaxed state of mind.
  • Valerian Compound is very beneficial and can be used as a 'top up' to Scullcap & Valerian.
  • ADAPTIL Collars may help to work against worries, but it must be left on throughout the 4 weeks period to be effective.

Finding the right combination is important for each individual. All of the above used together may well be the answer, but do not be afraid to try all that you can, in a kind and positive manner, to ensure that your dog has the best possible chance of feeling less concerned.

Calming products will not work as stand alone options. Most dogs's will require something to keep them occupied, but it's also important to ensure that their interest in whatever you provide is evident prior to fireworks starting. So prepare in advance of the evening drawing in, set them up for success and such evenings should be that little bit easier for them to cope with.

For more tips, see the following article on our sister site, Your Dogs Needs: Your Dog and Fireworks.

29th April 2013   Gill Wins the "Solo Catch" Challenge

Gill Prepares for a Solo CatchAs you may have read previously...well, about a year ago in fact, one of our Novice Course owners took up the challenge of teaching their dog, Odin the Hungarian Viszla, to 'solo catch'. This challenge involves teaching the dog in question to hold food or a toy item on the muzzle section of their nose and on cue, flip the item into the air and catch it. It's not always an easy challenge, usually due to the fact that the item is so readily available to them, making it hard for them to resist the urge to simply take it...or drop their heads, let it fall and pick it up. Nevertheless, Odin was successfully taught the 'solo catch' and received a Dog Pyramid from us, as his prize.

Since that time we have had another lovely success with the same trick. As mentioned with Odins' original 'tail' (sorry!), this is a trick of patience and shaping, whereby you break down the elements of each area of the trick, allow the dog the chance to make decisions and learn by any 'failures' during the process.

We are delighted to share with you that Gill, the beautiful one year old Black Labrador has also walked away with a prize of a Nina Ottosson Dog Dizzy after her owner, Claire, taught Gill to remain steady enough to hold the food on her muzzle, flip the food and catch it, perfect Solo Catch! Huge congratulations to Gill...and Claire, of course, wonderful partnership and fab trick training.

If you have taken up this challenge and succeeded since leaving our training groups, please do let us know, we'd love to share your trick shots on our site. We are always happy to receive photos too.

Happy training, trick or otherwise.
