Your Dog and Fireworks - Tips for Tonight

Don’t leave your dog on their own tonight during the fireworks. Provide plenty of toys, chews, etc for them to keep themselves occupied.

When the fireworks start, if your dog reacts, do not punish them or they will associate a problem with fireworks. Neither should you try to soothe them as they may see this as praise for their behaviour. Instead, try to get them to play with some of their toys with you.

Create a den like area with at least two sides enclosed under a table with a blanket for your dog and have your television or radio on. The constant 'noise' will help to reduce the level of noise coming from outside. Make sure you draw the curtains to reduce the effect of flashes and try not to react to the fireworks yourself.

For more tips, see Your Dog and Fireworks.

Slug Pellets in Hamworthy

WARNING: SLUG PELLETS - Some of the houses at Cobbs Quay have planted along the public side of their wall and one house that backs onto Falconer Drive has put down slug pellets. These are extremely poisonous to dogs' and if you suspect your dog has ingested any, you need to get your dog to a vet ASAP to receive the correct treatment.

A puppy has been treated and luckily is fine due to the quick thinking of both the owner and the vets.

This has been reported to the council and hopefully they will ensure these slug pellets are removed immediately.

20th April 2012   Odin Wins the "Solo Catch" Challenge

Odin Prepares for a Solo CatchOver the years we've always included fun tricks as part of our training. Although not an essential part of any dogs' learning, we feel that having fun whilst teaching our dogs' something new and different is a great way to help with the bonding process. During the teaching of the 'leave' cue during our Novice Course we set our clients a challenge over the years and until now nobody has achieved what was set out.

The trick, in this instance, is called a 'solo catch', this basically means the dog holds a piece of food or a toy on their muzzle, waits until given the cue to move, flips the food/toy in the air and catches the food/toy. It can be tricky to teach as the dog is required to remain still.

We were delighted when Odin, a 7 months old Hungarian Viszla, carried out this trick with relative ease during week 8 of his Novice Course.

In the picture shown, you can see Odin concentrating well. His owner is using the 'watch me' command and shows a finger to help focus his eyes away from the food (we must stress this holding technique is not aversive in any way, just a nice and non invasive way of gently supporting the dog where needed). Shortly after this picture was taken, the hand he was resting his chin on was removed and Odin was given the cue to 'catch', where he then flipped the food up in the air and caught it.

For completing this trick Odin went away with a prize of a new Dog Pyramid, as he loves to use his brain figuring out how to remove food from containers, so this is the perfect prize! Congratulations Odin, Samantha and Calum, he's a fantastic dog with wonderful focus!

19th April 2012   Hudson Accepted as a P.A.T. Dog

Tricks 4 Treats would like to congratulate one of our clients, Julia Wilkin who has recently undergone assessment with Hudson, a Miniature Schnauzer who has been accepted as a Pets As Therapy (P.A.T) dog.

The test carried out was to ensure sound health and temperament. Hudson has demonstrated that he is in perfect health and has an excellent temperament aswell as showing that being groomed isn't an issue and he walked nicely on lead, as requested. After having references confirmed, Julia and Hudson were accepted earlier this year and are now awaiting their first regular placement.

Huge congratulations, Julia & Hudson, what a remarkable dog he is and all credit to you for your dedication!

If you are interested in finding out further information relating to what P.A.T offers, please take a look at their web site: http://www.petsastherapy.org/

8th March 2012   Lynwood Veterinary Group Puppy Socialisation Groups in Swanage

Tricks 4 Treats was recently invited to offer training and behavioural assistance as part of Lynwood Veterinary Group Puppy Socialisation Groups in Swanage, of course we were delighted to have been asked and accepted.

The puppy groups run in 3 week slots and carry small numbers. week 1 covers socialisation and habituation and week 2 is a talk with one of the vets, providing health information.

We take part on week 3 where we offer the early stages of basic training, covering the relevant areas to help the owners on the path to successful training.

This is a lovely way for you pre vaccinated pups to mix with pups of a similar age. Overall is a packed 3 week course and invaluable as a starting point for puppies. We're certainly having fun!

Poole Campaigners Honoured at the Kennel Club's KC Dog Awards

DWAG was presented with the accolade on account of the positive action they have taken to help Poole’s dogs lead happy, healthy lives, which includes campaigning to ensure that overly restrictive dog control orders were not unnecessarily implemented in local Hamworthy Park, taking a proactive approach to keeping the park free from litter and other environmental nuisances, and building good relationships with national organisations such as the Kennel Club and Keep Britain Tidy.

Take a look at the DWAG News page for more information.

BBC TV - Woof!: A Horizon Guide to Dogs (BBC 4)

" Dallas Campbell looks back through the Horizon archives to find out what science can tell us about our best friend the dog, and whether new thinking should change the way we treat them. From investigating the domestic dog's wild wolf origins to discovering the remarkable impact that humans have had on canine evolution, Dallas explores why our bond with dogs is so strong and how we can best use that to manage them. "

Woof!: A Horizon Guide to Dog' was an insightful and up to date programme offering pet dog owners the chance to understand how the evolution of dog training has adapted sine the 1960’s/1970’s. Science is wonderful, because with it we've been able to unlock the dogs' mind and gain a vast understanding of how best to achieve a happy, well rounded and well trained dog.

Here's the link to view the programme via your computer, but you only have until Thursday 8th March before this is removed, it would be a real shame to miss out on true understanding with the science behind how our four legged friends should be raised by us:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01cqrvs/Woof!_A_Horizon_Guide_to_Dogs/

Do ensure you watch the program through to the end to see the most up to date understanding of how dogs learn.

In addition to this, and which gives more of an explanation of what is covered in the above program, is the Welfare in Dog Training web site.

This site was developed to show how dog training has moved on, the assumptions made in the first place and, with the use of science, how we realised that the original ideas were flawed in how dogs learn and live with us humans:

http://www.dogwelfarecampaign.org/

The idea that dominating our dogs'/being pack leader is the way to guide our dogs’ is dispelled here and should be shared with every dog owner. With any education, there isn't ever going to be a quick fix, whether human, canine or other animal. We should sometimes take a step back, both physically and emotionally to gain a better understanding of our animals prior to inflicting unnecessary and dangerous aversive techniques on them.
